If you've never experienced a boudoir shoot before, it's completely normal to have questions.

What do I wear? Will I know how to pose? What happens to my photographs? And what if I'm nervous? We've heard them all.

Here are some of the questions we're asked most often. And if yours isn't here, just get in touch. We'd much rather you ask than spend time wondering.

Is there an age limit?

Absolutely not.

We've photographed women from their 20s through to their 60s, and we believe boudoir photography is about far more than age or a particular idea of beauty.

Your body doesn't have to look a certain way to be photographed beautifully. With expert posing, lighting and styling, we'll create photographs that celebrate you, as you are now.

Will my photographs be private?

Yes. Completely.

Privacy is our default position. Your photographs won't be published online or added to our portfolio unless you specifically give us permission.

If you'd love to share a photograph or two, we'd be delighted. But it's entirely your choice. Your session is yours, and your privacy is respected.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes.

You're welcome to bring a female friend for moral support if that makes you feel more comfortable.

We don't have boyfriends, partners or husbands attend the session, however. We've found that keeping the studio environment focused on you makes a significant difference to the experience and allows you to relax into the photography.

Do I need to know how to pose?

Not at all.

In fact, most of our clients have never modelled and have absolutely no idea what to do in front of a camera. That's our job.

We'll guide you through everything – from the position of your feet and hands to where to look and how to move. We'll make small adjustments throughout the session to create flattering shapes and beautiful photographs.

What if I don't love my body?

You're certainly not alone.

Most women don't walk into the studio thinking they're a model. Bodies change. We have scars, stretch marks, curves, lines and bits we'd rather hide. That's real life.

Our job is to use posing, lighting and styling to photograph you beautifully — whatever your age, shape or size. You don't need to change your body before your session.

The body you have today is worth photographing.

What should I bring?

Once you've booked, we'll send you a preparation guide with everything you need to know.

We'll also talk through your ideas before your session, including what you'd like to wear and the kind of photographs you're hoping to create.

You don't need to arrive with a complicated plan. We'll help you work it out.

What happens before my shoot?

Every session begins with a short consultation call.

It's a chance for us to talk about what you're looking for, answer your questions and explain how the experience works. Just as importantly, it gives both of us an opportunity to make sure we're the right fit.

We want you to feel comfortable before you ever step in front of the camera.

What if I'm nervous?

Expect to be.

Almost everyone is. Walking into a studio and being photographed in lingerie – or less – can feel like a big deal. But you won't be left to figure it out yourself.

We'll guide you from the very first pose, keep things relaxed and make sure you know what's happening throughout. Most clients find that the nerves disappear surprisingly quickly.

Then comes the best part. You see the photographs. And realise just how good you look.

Can I choose how revealing my photographs are?

Of course.

Your comfort comes first.

You can keep things beautifully covered, explore something more sensual, or create fine-art nude images. There is no expectation that you need to reveal anything you're uncomfortable with. We'll discuss your boundaries before we begin and work entirely within them.

You are always in control.

Where are you located?

Smoke&Mirrors Studio is based in Casebrook, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Our private studio gives us complete control over the lighting and environment, allowing us to concentrate on creating beautiful, timeless photographs.
